Rasterbrille is a German name, and that's how they
are known in Italy. Of course they can be called also pinholes glasses,
or stenopeic glasses (in Spanish they are sometimes called "Estenos")
They allow a sharper vision in a wide array of
eye conditions, from myopia to albinismus.
Moreover they positively stimulate the eyes to
regain their natural mobility and also favor centralization (what Bates
used to call "central fixation", the most important quality of
a healthy eye, according to him).
They are NOT fit for
- reading in a poor light
- driving or any other dangerous activity
How many conditions could benefit from their use?
- Farsightedness and presbyopia (old age farsightedness):
for reading and working on a computer.
- Myopia: watching TV or computer screens, or even
for reading.
- Astigmatism: same
- Strabism or differences between the two eyes:
to help them to a better integration .
- Cataracts: They are the only kind of glasses
that can give a sharper vision.
- Albinismus: They can effectively reduce
the impact of sun light. In many cases better than sun glasses.
- And many others....
Problems?
- They are not fit for activities involving fast
movements (driving, sports, and so on)
More positive effects:
- They train the eyes to avoid staring, reestablishing
the natural saccadic movements, improving sharpness.
- They can be a substitute for under corrected
glasses during vision recovery. In facts they adapt to every change of
eye power.
- They can often be used instead of sun glasses.
- They have a low price and an attractive styling
Type A plastic, black

Type C metal frame,
very light and trendy
Type D metal
frame
NOTICE: The
holes are in the shape of a PYRAMID. That helps to filter light and
glare more effectively
They are particularly well suited for problems between +4 and -4 diopters
(myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism)
For higher prescriptions many people find "bifocals" (see
under) more comfortable.
Rasterbrille "bifocals"
Upper holes are tinier and more frequent. The holes
in the lower part are less but bigger
Types available: only C and D come in a bifocal version
What's good in them?
When you need to shift frequently between two distances
(screen and keyboard ...).
There is no discomfort or distortions with the shift (while in normal bifocal
glasses you may experiment both).. Also if you have a prescription of more
or less than 4 diopters, these glasses can be more suited.
